I don't have an AF540FGZ so I can only go on what the manual says
(you can download it from the website...)

1) set the body's flash mode to Auto and leave the flash unit turned
on in dedicated auto mode.

2) from what I see, if you are using a P-TTL dedicated flash unit in
dedicated mode on the DSLR bodies, it will operate in P-TTL mode. P-
TTL means that it does a preflash and integrates flash and ambient
exposure readings, establishes a setting, before making the actual
exposure. The time delay from pre-flash to exposure is very very
small. This allows the greatest flexibility, combined with both
ambient and flash exposure compensation controls, to get precisely
the exposure you want.

Personally, I use non-dedicated flash units: a Sunpak 383, a Nikon
SB-30, a pair of Paterson EFlash Panel units, a Promaster flash
extension cord, and a LumiQuest Mini-Softbox for the Sunpak. And a
flash meter when I'm not using the Sunpak on Auto mode. Were I
shooting dance, I might go for a few more powerful flash units, with
diffusers, a set of light stands and radio triggering. I hate on-
camera direct flash except for fill purposes... ;-)
