I believe it is different nowadays. Used to be when the US importers were independent companies that the US warranty was only good in the US, and the international warranties were not honored here. Now all the big name companies seem to own their importer/distributer themselves, so it is not so hard and fast. Best way to find out would be to contact Nikon USA.
