Boot up the system on the Mac OS X installation dvd/cd. When the installer comes up, go to the tools menu and elect Disk Utility. Once that's up, select the startup volume and run a disk verify. Afterwards restart the system from the hard disk and check... It is possible you have a bit of file system corruption and the system thinks there's more data on the drive than there actually is.
If that doesn't do it, go into iPhoto and see if what you put in its trash has actually been deleted.
