I decided to do more road biking rather than mountain biking and was looking for a "new" bike. Then I had the big DUH! moment when I saw the old Takara Deluxe Touring 12 speed hanging in my parents' garage. They gave it to me on my 16th birthday in 1984. New tires (the old ones were 23 years old and dry rotted), tubes, bar wraps, clip-on pedals, a few adjustments and it is mostly road-worthy.
I'll probably tear down the bottom bracket and clean it up a bit more. The shifting is pretty smooth but the brakes are crap and need some adjustments.
