Somewhat to my surprise, one of the best was the Iwo Jima flag-raising by Joe Rosenthal. Forget the controversy over it being the second flag, propaganda or whatever: It's a fabulous work of art. The composition is impeccable, the lighting perfect and the pose of the soldiers spot-on - he couldn't have improved it if he'd staged it in a studio in Los Angeles with models and fully-controlled lighting.
