I'm certainly not prepared to pay the kind of money they want for a
carbon frame.  Not that I think spending $3500 or more on a bicycle
is ridiculous if it's worth it to you - it just isn't worth it to me.
(After all, most people think spending $3500 on a lens is crazy).
For 10% of that price I got a bike that's well suited to my uses,
with brand names (Raleigh, Shimano, etc.) that I recognize.

It was interesting looking at the prices before I purchased.  The
mass consumer market seems to be in the $200-$400 range (street price).
There are cheaper bikes available (as low as $60!), but the largest
choice is definitely in that price bracket.  Then, at the enthusiast
part of the market, there's a cluster around that $3500 price point.
In between there's far less choice (and you practically have to visit
a good brick-and-mortar cycle store to find out what really exists).
