Scrumpy is an extremely pleasant way of falling asleep in a field. I've never heard of cripple cock. It sounds like a modern brand name.
Scrumpy is cider, generally cloudy, and produced in small batches by old-fashioned methods by non-commercial or low-volume producers for very local consumption. It tends to be less refined than commercial cider and a lot stronger. It's a more traditional kind of thing really. In the old days every (farm)house in the West Country would have a few cider apple trees in the garden and people would brew their own. My brother and his wife used to have a party in their field every year (in the West Country). The party involved a small local band, bbq over a 50-gallon drum, and vast quantities of scrumpy. The party would continue until everyone had fallen asleep in the field. Scrumpy is quite cheap usually (even cheaper than normal cider). I remember at the end of a very long walk from Dorset into Somerset years ago finding a tiny, low-beamed little pub which served home-brewed draught scrumpy which was awesome, and only cost about 40p a pint - when beer cost about £2 per print. One pint of the stuff was almost enough to incapacitate me, but in the nicest possible way. -- Bob > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On > Behalf Of Scott Loveless > Sent: 24 August 2007 16:57 > To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List > Subject: OT - Farmyard Scrumpy > > Would someone from across the pond mind explaining farmyard > scrumpy in > general and cripple cock (shut up, Norm) specifically?
