Hi, Mike

You may be right about Doisneau's "The Kiss" causing some of the confusion. I too
read that it was posed; I think that's now generally accepted.

There is also some confusion caused by the fact that a Navy photographer took a
photo of the same event as Eisenstadt, at almost the same moment (the nurse is even
tugging down at her dress), but it's not nearly as wonderful a photo.

Further, as you stated, a number of people have come forward over the years,
claiming to be the sailor and the nurse in the photo. One of the claimants claimed
that the photo was posed, contrary to what Eisenstadt himself said. There were also
rumours that the shot was actually taken on VE Day, some months earlier, and sat in
archives until VJ Day, but that too has been discounted due to documents that put
Eisenstadt out of the country on VE Day.

Anyway, to look at the image, along with the contacts of the three other shots taken
by Eisenstadt of the couple, go to this site:

There's also a discussion about the veracity of the image, along with a link to the
Navy photographer's photo.

regards,
frank
