Subject: RE: MZ-50 metering

David Brooks asked about metering on the MZ-50....

Hi Dave,

I've got an MZ-50. If you use A-series or later lenses, just leave them on
the A setting, then always select aperture setting from the body. Metering
in this case will be just fine. On the other hand, if you use M- or
K-series lenses on an MZ-50 -- which I often do -- the body will only meter
properly if you have the lens aperture ring set to wide open. The reason
for this is that the MZ-50 lacks that little linkage that tells the body
where the lens aperture ring is actually set. This isn't a problem as long
as ~you~ set the aperture and shutter speeds correctly, rather than
depending on the camera body to do the work for you. For instance, I can
mount my K135/2.5, set the lens aperture ring to f/5.6, and shoot to my
heart's content in AV or full program (smiley face?) mode, as long as I set
exposure compensation for about two and a half stops of overexposure.

Using M- or K-series lenses with TTL flash isn't a problem at all -- as long
as the flash provides most of the illumination -- since proper metering is
accomplished through correct quenching of flash.

IIRC, the MZ-50 won't meter at all in manual mode when an M- or K-series
lens is mounted. But at least it still lets you fire the shutter curtains.
As I understand, the MZ-30 won't even let you fire the shutter curtains when
an M- or K-series lens is mounted.

Hope this helps.

Have a good weekend,
