You are being a smart ass, Peter. One, would with no other reference, figure it was from zero latitude, if it was from anything else a reference would be needed. Reference from zero can always be assumed. Not too far from from my apartment is a sign that says
Eastern Continental Divide 3360 ft. Are you going to ask 3360 feet from what or, are you going to assume "above mean sea level"? Of course I imagine there are people who would see Wendy's sign and think, "That sign is 10 miles from my house so the North Pole must be 10 miles from here", but I would think such a person was pretty ignorant.
