I'm sure you're right that it doesn't happen all the time and that all cameras have problems. My *ist D appears to be heat sensitive. If left in a hot car, it goes berserk (as I've discussed before) and any control, switch, button, or dial actuates the shutter and leaves it in the up position. Taking batteries out and reinserting sometimes fixes it. Other times I just have to wait.
My issue with the VPN is that surely Pentax was aware of the problem. They indicate that in firmware version 1.1 they have fixed an issue that in rare cases produces a vertical stripe at long exposures. Whether this is the same issue, I don't know.
