As suggested by the other response and what I've heard before, it seems like the most likely type of failure is that a spring or whatever breaks so that it won't stay up. In fact, I very nearly bought an MZ-5n in that condition on eBay a couple of days ago, but didn't quite manage to get the winning bid. I think someone at some point posted an explanation of how he fixed such a problem at one point. This somehow reminds me of some of the spam mails I tend to get.
