Came today, just after breakfast.
I will post some pix very soon, but I can tell you
that the autofocus with the K10D is MUCH, MUCH quieter
than that of my FA 24-90mm or the 31 LTD, in fact,
there's literally no comparison. The DA* focuses
quietly enough that it's tough to hear in quiet room
with just me and camera to my eye. The focus appears
to be faster as well, at least in my walking around
and shooting in AF.S mode.
It is a very substantial lens. It's a tad heavy and
the zoom is more stiff than other lenses I've used
(this is my first DA lens so I can't compare it
against any others). I chalk this up to the weather
sealing. It seems a formidable piece of equipment as
though it can take some punishment.
Why this lens? I don't have anything wide for the K10D
right now. The widest I had was the A20mm f2.8. Plus,
it is effectively just a faster version of my only
other zoom, the FA 24-90mm, which I really love. Also
because it was fast, both aperture-wise and
autofocus-wise. I had originally wanted the
DA*50-135mm first since compared to it's closest FA
conterpart (80-200 f2.8) it's a lot more affordable
and I always wanted a fast lens in that focal range.
But, wider always seems to win out with me. So, if I
like what I see with this one, I'll buy the 50-135 as
well.
Still not a big fan of no aperture ring. Still can't
get used to that even after 10 months with the K10D.
As I suspected it's just not as natural for me to
shoot Av and use a wheel for the aperture control.
But, if going to SBM and weather sealing is the trade
off, and if the lenses are less expensive (and less
heavy) but just as good, I'll live with it! Let this
be my last public bitching on the matter ;~*
