I'm more inclined to assume that the shoes were put there by other people who had read articles like this, however. But at the same time, I can't quite shake the thought that this is some sort of memorial for a person who died, which had also entered my mind earlier ;-( Another peculiarity of "my" shoes is that they were painted green - in at least two of the cases where I've seen this.
