I've tried both versions, as well as a Promaster-branded version, and found the Pentax to be sharper as well. I'm fairly certain the primary difference is the coatings, since the Tamron rep hinted at that when I asked him about this very lens a few years ago.
It could also be you ended up with a defective lens.
