Some may consider it very important. As an example, I don't have breeding rights on Jester, so I have nothing to gain by his getting his championship other than bragging rights that I own a peer recognized dog and a warm feeling someplace other than my pants, but I still intend to show him to championship A breeder may have several dogs in a show, this doesn't change that it is a competition. Really, does the gallery differ in principle from this?
