The pictures were taken from 821 Sixth Avenue. I don't know if that's
near Sixth Street. Apparently the building was once a brothel, but was
rented cheap by jazz musicians and other arty bohemian & Beat types.
Smith also did a series called The Loft From The Inside In, in which
he photographed the people who lived there and passed by.

I think Smith invented the title. His photography was great, but his
prose was leaden and portentous - which I think that title is.

It looks like a great area. It's a shame these places get ruined. I'm
living in an area which I love at the moment, but already it's
starting to be surrounded by more and more high rises.
