Thanks Peter, that's a relief but also a puzzle. The problem could be that I signed out at the end of my previous session, but hadn't cleaned my web cache. Undeleted cookies might tell google to require a signing in before I can proceed. Next time I'll be sure to flush out my cache and then see how well the links work before I've signed in and got a new cookie.
