They probably ran it through C-41 chemicals. I've found that if you're not giving them color print film, it's best not to even talk to the person behind the counter. More often than not, especially at chain stores, they don't have a clue. Their employer should take a few minutes to explain to them that there is more than one type of film. They apparently can't be bothered to do this.
Just put it in the envelope, make some notes like "Ektachrome! Process E-6" in the little box at the bottom, and drop it in the bin.
