I don't need an editor which can play the Marseillaise via system beeps?

Emacs has its uses. It's probably the finest coding environment developed. As a 
pure text editor, it's useless for most work, far too byzantine unless you live 
in it (Which, since it can read email and news, and probably by know has a 
full-featured browser, you can should you so choose).
