I know that your tongue is somewhat in cheek with this, but you aren't too far off the mark for what should be expected of photography students. The local tech college here is still issuing 4x5 cameras to students, and the Don has been bugging me recently to part with my mechanical cameras, which are quite in demand due to attrition. I wouldn't ask a student to build their own camera unless they were also in the carpentry program, as one skill isn't necessary for the other, but I wouldn't issue them zoom lenses ever, and if the course happened to include digital cameras, they would get a hobbled RAW converter and nothing else for post processing. Let the little bastards learn how to make their pictures without Photoshop. One of things I am being asked to do quite often at the shop is to fix pictures taken by supposed pros that should have been easy images to make if the person had a clue about what they were doing.
