Apart from the fact that it's free, it's a very powerful image editor provided 
you can live with its 8 bit limitation and the somewhat unusual user interface.

Persistence will overcome any interface issues and once you get over that 
you'll find it's very competent, with support for layers, layer masks and most 
of the other features that a high-end image editor should have.  The UF Raw 
plugin also does quite a good job with PEF files.  I think its possible to 
automate some functions via scripts (similar to Photoshop actions?) but I 
haven't tried that.
