I hate replacing main drives, it takes me weeks to get the machine back to 
the way I like it.
If you can get things mapped, then it's not such a big deal, I guess. I've 
always done clean installs though, which is a royal pain.
I just discovered the settings migration tool that Win XP comes packaged 
with, which made my new machine a lot easier to deal with.
If you don't have irreplacable data on the thing, I'd just use it until it 
craps out.
A couple of things that I've done on my machines is to seperate the "My 
Documents" and email storage directories from the C drive, and I also export 
my address book and bookmarks files to a backup drive from time to time.
