Over here they treat it as they would lost property, and presume that
you've made an innocent mistake. In my case I had a knife in my camera
bag, and I'd forgotten about it (I keep one in there out of habit).
They took it from me, tagged it, gave me a receipt and asked me to
collect it from lost property when I came back (I think they may have
charged five quid), or they would post it to me for a fee. That's a
perfectly simple, civilised way to do things, and uses an existing
process, so no real additional cost to them.
