After my first week with my MZ-S, I would like to share with the group
my short experience with this camera.
As everybody has said so far, it is very well built. In fact, although
my MZ-5 is not a flimsy camera, the MZ-S is in a completely different
league and it only belongs to the MZ line nominally.
When the camera first appeared at Photokina, my main criticism was the
little magnification of the finder. I still think that I would prefer it
had the same magnification my MX has (0.97X), but at least the MZ-S
viewfinder is better in one thing: I usually wear contact lenses when
I'm using a camera, but now I can see all the viewfinder info around the
image when using glasses and this is impossible with the MX. Anyway, I
still prefer to use the contact lenses. It is also great to focus
manually.
I have seen that the MZ-S, and I don't know if it has been mentioned
previously in the list, also has the extra contacts the Z-1 has got to
read the exposure latitude info on the DX film canister.
But not all my impressions are so positive, I'm afraid. My only
complaint is that it is impossible to change the focus point quickly and
comfortably when you use the camera for vertical shots with the BG-10
battery grip installed. I simply don't have such long fingers, in fact I
believe no one has, except Dracula or E.T. It is very easy to do when
you are using the camera horizontally, or if you do verticals without
the grip. Then I tend to use only the central focus point when I use the
grip vertically.
The placement for the DOF preview lever is simply great. I find myself
using it much more than I usually do with the Z-1 or the MX.
The AF is really much faster and responsive, and I can notice this
mainly with the F* 300 mm. 4.5 and the FA* 80-200 mm. 2.8
Well, that's all for the moment.
