You've got it right. For now.

A few years ago it *was* the other way around: CCD was generally much 
less noisy than CMOS. That reversed with the advance of technology. I 
suppose it could do so again (an arms race kind of scenario), but CMOS 
is likely to always be less expensive to produce.

But I note with interest that even Canon, the acknowledged master of 
CMOS sensors, hasn't tried to make pixels small enough to cram 14 
million of them into APS-C.

I'll be happy if Pentax pulls off a coup. But my money's staying in my 
pocket until after the camera's been on the market for a while and I've 
had a chance to examine the results carefully.
