A lot of cameras are offering it now.

What it supposedly does, depending upon the camera, is identify the  
faces in a scene and attempt to set the focus and aperture to bring  
them into reasonable focus. It's more or less effective depending  
upon the complexity of the scene and the physical limitations of  
getting a good exposure vs DoF and focus point.

It's useful for snap shooting, casual pictures of family and friends,  
with minimal thought: an automation convenience. Whether that's of  
interest to you I cannot say.
