I was referring to looking @ the image's histogram in levels & ensuring the whitest white in the image was @ the far RH portion of the histogram without blowing out the details (clipping) & also ensuring the blackest black (shadow detail) in the image was @ the far LH portion. In levels, holding the alt/option key gives you a clipping preview as you adjust the white point slider. Using the alt/option key, while adjusting the black point slider shows you where you're losing shadow detail in the image.
