Last spring I bought a set of eight "tasting sized" samples of single malt scotch, very small bottles sufficient for a 5-8 person tasting, some of which were of 18 and 25 year olds that I knew were quite good but a fifth bottle of which ran $100-260, the others ran in the $30-70 range. I invited friends to a tasting and we went through them.
To my delight, Glen Rothes Select Reserve, about $45 or so per fifth, was one of my favorites. I roll in the gutter with the rest of the plebs, I guess. ]'-) Since a fifth bottle lasts me typically 3 months, the way I pay myself back for the luxury is go out for two fewer espresso coffee drinks per week.
