The Bridge-to-Bridge has been around for years and I've thought about doing it. I've also considered the Grandfather Mountain Marathon (which ends at the meadows) and the Bear 5-mile (which *does* go all the way up to the bridge). I did a century in that area in 2006, the Blood, Sweat and Gears century (http://www.bloodsweatandgears.org/Home.html), which has two climbs comparable to the road up GFM.
