Thanks a lot to everybody for responding with a lot of helpful information!
... despite Dave not using Peter not using canvas... (or something like that) :-) If somebody is interested, let me share my experience with these non-traditional media. I actually had a few prints printed on canvas and on watercolor paper. I liked canvas better. With a proper matting (or stretched -- one has to remember leaving plenty of margin) and framing (of a suitable subject photo) you get an effect of a painting. I had it done twice, once by a pro-printing lab near me, in San Diego (chromedigital.com), and the other time by a lab in Russia. The canvas differed considerably. One of them had a coarser grain. (Also, I learned about this protective coating that is presumably good even for pigment ink: PremierArt Print Shield.) Recently I tried to print on Kodak Endura Metallic Paper which is according to Kodak "suitable for both optical and digital printing". http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/products/papers/enduraMetallic/main.jhtml http://preview.tinyurl.com/2dmfwf I like the effect produced by some selected photos. I've done it at mpix.com, but I see that adoramapix.com also can do it. Mpix.com e-mail a suitable colorspace profile for proofing in Photoshop upong request.
