Yes, it is possible. However, that doesn't change anything.
What does this "2008 Hot One Award" mean? 
- That the lens is great (who knows what the production lens will be..
Besides, it would be award for the lenses of 2007, not 2008.)
- That the lens will be in demand (Are they self-proclaimed prophets? 
And who cares it is in demand or not -- I think we care for the quality 
of it, not for the hype.. Well, I should probably speak for myself.)
- That the lens will be sold hot and requires special handling upon
purchase. (If you buy it with ground shipment, it will cool down ;-) )

In general, I am very sceptical about most of such awards, but 
issuing "2008" awards in early January of 2008 is profanation.
(even more than selling "2009" model cars in spring of 2008.)
