Hi, I think the problem is the usage of the word contrast. The intention is to control the relation between the brightness of the room/background which is illuminated by bouncing the main flash. The sub-flash enlightens the desired object in front of the camera. If the grey filter is used at the sub-flash, the background gets brighter. The results in a lower contrast between object and background.
