I think you get the same whether you pay or not. I never had a problem with the text ads that they used to have. Photo.net has for quite a few years been one of my favourite sites for viewing lots of interesting work. But the recent site re-design with the inclusion of obnoxious banner ads pisses me off. So much so that I bought a flickr account instead.
