I had Norton on the old computer and it took ages also..

I haven't noticed pc-C'l'n doing that on my new one..
It goes through a routine once a day at noon... which I'll be damned if
I can remember why it got set there :)

==================
Ann, want to recommend to you free protection tools, that I found
recommended on many sites years ago. I've been using them for years.

I run Spybot Search and Destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware periodically,
especially when my computer starts slowing down (which may indicate I've
picked up
something I don't want from the Net).

They remove unwanted background processes (spybots) and malware, adware,
etc. Spyware Guard also runs all the time in the background, protecting. I
think
I found these recommended on a famous geek site originally, but I also found
them all recommended in various places on the Net.

All freeware, as in free.

Spyware Guard

Spybot Search & Destroy

(It's international.)

Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free

Something like Norton is totally unnecessary.

I highly recommend them. Saved me lots of pain. Note, when you run Ad-Aware
-- I, personally tend to keep cookies on my machine, so when I revisit sites
my password is still known on that site. It's optional whether to remove
cookies, so that is up to you.
