I have the older generation Sigma 70-300 APO Macro, the one with only 1 "apo" element. Soft at 300 wide open, and the usual complaint about flare that folks often have with Sigma consumer zooms. For gawd's sake, use the hood, man! grin. Can't complain for the money, and the half-life-size macro at 300 is truely useful, if a tad awkward to use (there's a switch to further extend the lens, and you MUST have the zoom set at 300 before the switch engages. Not a biggie, but a minor hassle). Front element rotates (pain with a polarizer), and there's noticable wobble when extension, due to zoom or focus, occurs. But then, that's like most "modern" lenses. BTW, Sigma sells a 2-element diopter for this lens that takes it to life size. I'm thinking about buying the diopter, so I guess that means I still use then lens a fair amount. I've heard that the current generation APO, the one I assume you're looking at, is a better lens than the one I have. Lots of others on this list seem to like this and the DL 70-300, also from Sigma. Perhaps Alan Chan will comment; he seems to like this lens. Good luck. -Lon - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions.
