Paul, I don't have time to go through all the posts on this, so perhaps
you already know what follows.

This is a well-known fault, and discussions of it can be found at
dpreview. Dpreview's search function is nearly useless when it works,
and often it doesn't. But there is a way to use Google to search within
dpreview. Or you could register there and post your question. Someone
will direct you to the thread you need.

In short, a little pin gets stuck and won't retract. You may need to
undo some screws on the bottom of the flash to get at the locking
mechanism. It's not too difficult. Many have done it.

Ahh...just found this:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=24612047

But somewhere there's another thread that actually has photos of the pin.

Funny thing is, the 360 has the same locking mechanism but all or nearly
all complaints are about the 540. Since these have good friction without
the locking pin the best solution (once you have yours off) is not to
lock the flash down.

Joe
