Thanks for your comments all, I think I will play a little more with the filter.
I will rotate a little as Rick suggested, I was quite surprised with how straight I got it really, considering it was hand held, through the IR filter you can see nothing ;-) I don't normally get it that straight when I can see through the viewfinder! Much of the cloud is high whispy stuff, but there are lots of contrails too. The photo was taken at Wakehurst Place http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-wakehurstplace/ which is only about 10 miles from Gatwick Airport, and not too far from the other London airports so contrails around here are a fact of life.
