Thanks Mike. never used the locking mech. I use a 580 EX a lot and never had an issue with locking it / unlocking (okay 'frictioning') but sometimes if I'm just grabbing a few shots I don't bother tightening up the ring. When you push the flash into the hotshoe, it very firmly 'clunks' into place. certainly doesn't fall out.
