Yes, an old idea.  When my Pentax ME was new, I bought a similar
product.  It was a chain with a screw thread attached to one end.  The
idea was identical.  Attach the chain to the tripod socket, step on
the chain, and pull it taught.  You eliminate one dimension of motion
(degree of freedom).

I have never used the chain seriously, but I got a 'Visegrip' pliers
with several screw heads braised onto it at the same time.  I've used
it frequently as a field tripod with a mini ball head.  Just clamp the
visegrip onto something and screw on the ball head.

This item drives the TSA guys crazy.  It is solid and black anodized
with a professional look.  They think it is part of a weapon, so it
goes in the checked baggage now.
