The lower battery was added in the 1840's the guns were probably originally smooth bore napoleons. The pictured emplacements probably date from the 1870's, probably designed for three or five inch rifled guns and were probably in general use until sometime in the 1920's or '30's by which time they were tactically completely obsolete.
