Hi Dave, I have the Tamron 28-75 XR Di, I think this is the lens you're referring to. >From what I've heard the early versions were made *and* assembled in Japan and were of very high quality, on later samples they were assembled in Korea, Vietnam......where ever and the quality control took a hit. Many Canon users reported problems and had to send their lenses back to be re-calibrated, sometimes more than once. The lens I have I got from a list member, made and assembled in Japan, serial# 0000***, great lens. For quite some time I never removed this lens from the camera despite having FA 50/1.4, FA 35/2 and FA 28/2.8 in the camera bag, unless I needed the faster aperture of the prime (rare). Just thought I'd share this with you.
