Since it appears to be a contrast thing, I would expect that a lens that 
manages to keep more contrast will have more fringing.  I'm not saying 
that's a good thing but the lens capable of  transmitting the higher 
contrast will appear sharper with certain subjects while the opposite 
will give less fringing in hight contrast situations.   Now my optical 
analysis could be all wet.  I only have anecdotal data...
