Rather than trying to "explain" the photo, I think HansAlbert on the  
DPReview Leica Talk forum did an excellent job of interpreting its  
expression:

The frames and panes of the window allude to the type area of an  
opened book, and similarly to the mirroring of one's own mind in the  
reading matter the image shows both, what is inside and what is  
outside of the cafe. Thus the composition corresponds to the subject  
matter, the man lost in a book, and it persuasively depicts its  
subject, the interrelationship between subject and object in reading  
– and in photographing. An inspiring photo.
