Buy only SDHC cards for any capacity greater than 2G. Be sure you also have a fast SDHC compatible card reader as well. Class 6 are the fastest ones. Class 2s will likely be fine for someone shooting JPEGs only. Sandisk and Panasonic make the most reliable SDHC cards, from what I've read so far.
