I was a student in Manchester from 75-77, so we must have just missed
each other. I couldn't afford to dress as well as you, on a grant of
£187- per term. My normal attire was jeans, blue suede desert boots, a
particularly nice cheesecloth shirt, and a black waistcoat. This was
all-weather gear. I remember one term being particularly difficult
when a pair of underpants I was drying in front a 2-bar heater melted,
and I was reduced to two pairs of underpants for the rest of term.

Towards the end of one term I sold the cheesecloth shirt off my back
to one of the girls on my course. She'd been admiring it for some
time, and I really needed the money.

In my last year I had a job behind the bar at the Mecca Ballroom on
Whitworth Street. By then I had a pair high-waisted pin-striped French
flares, which I wore to work over platform shoes. I had to wear an
electric blue crimplene tailcoat, with a plastic top hat to keep my
shoulder-length hair in place. Thank God no-one took any photos.

I cut my hair short when Bowie released "Heroes" because he looked
really cool, and it's a great song.
