She'll probably still get better results with the K10D and the 18-250  
than with most P&S cameras. And if she decides she needs a better  
lens, it's an option...

Photozone.de reviewed it recently. It seems a decent performer,  
within the limits of the kind, on Klaus' test bench.

But she is going to need a good flash unit too, to use that lens  
effectively indoors. The built-in flash unit only has so much power  
and will likely be occluded by the lens/lens hood at even modest  
focal length settings.
