To do a *full* system reset on the camera, pull the battery and let it sit for two-three days. You'll know it has fully reset if when you fit a battery and turn it on it comes up asking for you to set the date.
Other possibles: dirty AF sensors or a poor electrical connection between lens and body. I occasionally find I get this behavior with almost any lens. I remove and replace the lens and it goes away.
