If you run the .DNG files through DNG Converter, they'll shrink down to about the same size as the PEFs with lossless compression.
.PEF and .DNG files, out of the camera, contain the same data, but the files are structured quite differently. The sensor data in both, once the PEF is expanded for processing by a RAW converter, is identical.
