Shouldn't be this way, really.

I HIGHLY recommend Roxio's "Toast Titanium" - it DOES give you a  
running total, and even has the option to span multiple disks if what  
you've dragged in there is too much to fit onto one (as a matter of  
fact, I can't see how to turn spanning OFF but it does say "this will  
take 2 DVDs" and then I know to remove some stuff).

Can't remember what it costs, but it makes things so much simpler it's  
worth it.
